Located on a canal in Utrecht, The Netherlands, this houseboat by BYTR Architects is a contemporary dream. The clients wanted the experience of living on water combined with a high level of privacy. At the same time, they requested that their home offer views of the park and woodlands.

Inside, generously sized windows bring in natural light and frame the century-old trees. “We decided to keep the roof private for the family, with no physical borders or fences blocking the park setting, making it feel as much as possible like it’s part of the surroundings,” the architects explained.

The floating home, clad in local timber and copper panels, is permanently moored in the canal adjacent to a bike path. “The fishing boat, which floats next to the terrace, gives a feeling of freedom and allows the clients to jump in for a lazy boat trip,” the architects said.

Sleeping areas on the bottom level include a master bedroom and two single beds for kids and guests. The kitchen and living area are on the second floor. White walls contrasted by wooden cupboards and French oak flooring give the social areas a welcoming feel. [Photography by StijnStijl]
